Insurance Education Initiative

The UCSF PlaySafe program is committed to supporting health equity in San Francisco's public school system and in the community .

The Insurance Education Initiative was founded with the goal of healthcare education to help people make informed decisions about accessing healthcare.

Children with access to healthcare early on in life and through adolescents have been shown to have short- and long-term health, social, and economic gains.  These include better health overall status, higher educational attainment, and greater earnings as adults.

What are the benefits of having health insurance?

    • Well child visits
  • Post-pandemic healthcare
    • Sports Clearance after illness
    • Immunization accesss
  • Mental health access

For those that don't have private insurance, San Francisco's Medi-Cal options are an affordable alternative to ensure healthcare access.  We want to make sure you understand the options and make the best choice for you and your family.

Medi-Cal has nine healthcare networks to chose from when signing up for health insurance.  These plan's each have different providers, services, and hospitals that are contracted for care as well as different coverage options like PPO and HMO plans.

What's the difference between a deductable on a PPO plan vs a co-payment on an HMO plan?  What providers are in-netowrk vs out-of-network?  What services do I have to pay up front for?  These are the types of questions and differences we want to ensure the you know.
